Ancient polychromed ceramic vase from Peru depicting a seated dignitary with long hairlocks down his back. Wearing a nasal mask, winged headdress and segmented necklace. With rear head spout and strap handle. Has some scattered mineral deposits on the surface. Minor erosion on the handle, otherwise in intact condition. Dates to circa 200 AD and measures 9.2inches high.

The number of colours used by Nazca artists is greater than those used by any other culture in the Americas prior to contact with the Europeans. The iconography and symbolism represented by the Nazca lines are also found on their pottery and textiles; with motifs portraying local animals and plants. Also, scenes related to subsistence activities, supernatural beings and deities associated with water and fertility.

Prvenance: Ex. Howard Nowes, ex. Schultz, purchased before 1970.
