Rare red-figured Globular Apulian lidded pyxis, portraying Nike. The double winged Nike is adorned with a radiate stephane and ribboned saccos , white beaded necklace and earrings. The lid is set on a tiered foot and is decorated with an olive branch (symbol of victory) thus the association with the goddess Nike. This vessel has vivid colour, with intact white and yellow pigment surrounding much of the lid. In an excellent state of preservation with only a few small shards joined around the lip of the base (as seen in photo). The lid is absolutely intact and all original. Some calcium deposits in some areas. This Globular Pyxis is from circa the 4th century B.C. and measure 5.6 inches tall.

Nike is the goddess of victory in Greek Mythology and both Athena and Zeus are often seen carrying figures of Nike thus illustrating that she is in attribution to both gods. Nike is also often portrayed caring a palm, olive branch or wreath. Often seen in flight and illustrated with wings spread open and hovering above the victor. The symbolism of flight and victory was born of the belief that the “air” is the essence of life and in the air we find birds in flight, free and spirited thus the origin of the winged Nike. For reference see: Sotheby's New York, 8th June 1995, Lot No. 122.
