Moche IV Ceramic Owl Vessel Mochica Pottery Huaco Guaco
Here your find an exquisite Moche IV owl head ceramic from Peru. Dates to circa 450 - 550 AD. This very fine avian effigy vessel measures 10-1/2" in height and is sculpted with good attention to detail, attesting to the master skill of the ancient Moche. In Moche folklore the owl represented the spirits of the dead, wisdom, vision and the moon. In this example the face is expressive and enhanced with reddish paint. In excellent condition, with good mineral deposits.

Provenance: Museum deaccession, Ex: Florida Art Gallery.
