Here you find an ancient Apulian Greek black glazed Gnathia-ware bottle or lekythos, with a beveled lip. The body is painted with elaborate tendrils and grape vines and the slender neck with white strips. Painted with the typical Gnathia colours of red, white and yellow. Unfortunately this piece has a partial red surface due to a misfire in the kiln during production. Measures 5.9 inches in height The name "Gnathia" derived from the Apulian site of Egnathia where the first pieces were found. Gnathian pottery is often decorated with white, red and yellow paint and decorated with floral motifs. See: Hayes, W. John: Greek and Italian Black-Gloss Wares and Related Wares in the Royal Ontario Museum. |
