Here you find a red-figure skyphos from an Attic workshop. Both sides of the ceramic skyphos are represented with an owl between olive leaves. The owl and the olive are the symbols of Athena, after her mythologic victory against Poseidon for rule of the city. The image of the owl is represented on a large number of Greek coins and ceramics. Repaired from a few pieces as seen in the photo. Measures 5.25 inches in diameter. Priced to sell! See Christie's Antiquities, New York, June 2006, no. 141. price realized approx. $2,600 USD. |
