This mid 19th century folk art crazy quilt is a wonderful mix of richly colored silks and hand embellished surface stitches. The back is a green cotton sateen fabric tied with floss. Eighty seven silk tags create a whimsical border around the entire piece. Taken from a house used as part of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War, we believe this piece was the energetic work of a child learning how to sew. Lovely flower signed Jane among the varied and heavily embroidered pieces. Size: 55 in x 75 in approx. Condition is good. Brightly colored silks and stitching make this quilt spectacular. Silks of this period were not preserved well and this piece is no exception. Thirty border tags have some damage. Moderate amount of tearing in body of quilt.
