In recent weeks, we've been lucky enough to enlarge our selection of cufflinks by the legendary Belais brothers. Replenishing this stock has become hard to do, now that so many more people have discovered the beauty and quality of Belais white gold. Some sellers even on eBay are pricing these in the $300 range now, whereas we like to offer them at much more reasonable cost.

Here's a particularly beautiful and remarkable pair. Whereas most Belais jewels are Art Deco, these are earlier examples, decidedly Edwardian in spirit. The engraving is very intricate and opulent, but the overall effect is shimmering refinement.

Another indication of great age is the "Talon Grip Trademark" stamp that appears in addition to the gold content mark "Belais 14k White Gold Front". The Talon Prip brand of fastener was patented and produced by the HWK Company, formed in 1905 and out of business by the 1920s. Typically the HWK initials are also present, so it seems these links were made before that convention became established.

With domed oval faces measuring about 3/4" x 1/2", these beauties are a bit larger than most Belais cufflinks. Provenance is a Georgia estate and condition is so fine that they can't have been worn much. Every bit of this gorgeous engraved design looks as crisp as on the day it was made.

Even if you already have a pair of wonderful antique white gold cufflinks by the legendary Belais Brothers, you may need these, too. Most Belais jewels are Art Deco, but these are earlier examples dating from before World War I. Certainly no later than Edwardian, they could be Victorian, based on the link connectors, as well as the design.

Each octagonal face bears a profusion of intricate engraving that shows both Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau influences. Against a spiral background, the central motif is a stylized snowflake bordered by rows of tiny zigzags symbolizing thunderbolts -- and all this glory is set within an ornate border of curvy scrollwork! The remarkable design repeats four times as usual, since Belais links are double-ended.

Measuring 5/8 of an inch in each direction, these reached us from a Midwestern estate. Their condition is very nice, requiring high magnification to notice age-appropriate surface wear, and all four reverses are clearly stamped "Belais 14k White Gold Front". When you possess a piece bearing this name, quite simply you own the best, because the Belais brothers were the *gods* of white gold jewelry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Now that so many people have discovered the beauty and quality of Belais jewels, it's become terribly hard to keep pieces in stock. At the moment, we're fortunate enough to have three sets of Belais cufflinks. Even on eBay, some sellers are pricing these in the $300 range, whereas we like to offer them at much more sensible rates and keep looking until we find reasonable deals.

Comet jewels are scarce and highly collectible, and this antique comet stickpin is a particularly elegant example. Among the finest stickpins we've ever offered, it beautiful head is set with a central half pearl of good size plus six more lustrous seed pearls. These would almost certainly be natural sea pearls, since the process of culturing pearls had barely begun then.

To the modern eye, the head suggests a flower, but pieces like this were in fact intended to represent comets (the stem-like portion being the comet's tail, while the petals form a star). It was an approach typical since Georgian times, and indeed the pin could conceivably have commemorated a much earlier comet -- even Halley's passage in 1835, rather than 1910. The look wouldn't have differed. We're opting for the later date, mainly because of the 14k gold stamp, maker mark and excellence of construction associated with Edwardian times. Here the goldsmith managed to attach the stock with no visible solder marks; it actually appears to be all of one piece! The maker's stamp, resembling a cross or bird within an oval cartouche, is unknown to me, so please tell me if you can identify it.

In superb condition, showing no damage to either gold or pearls, the pin measures about 1 13/16 inches long and 5/16 of an inch at its widest. Provenance is a Boston area estate.

It's always a red-letter day, when a pair of Belais cufflinks arrives, but these are among the earliest examples we've seen, because the stamping isn't typical. Only two reverses are marked "Belais White Gold Front," whereas later examples from Art Deco times are marked on each reverse and also state whether they're 14k or 18k. Thus, these would have been made while the company was still experimenting with formulae for white gold -- a process they began around 1887. The resulting patents were issued in the World War I era, so these date from Edwardian or Late Victorian times. Their understated elegance is characteristic of Edwardian tastes, so they were most likely created between 1905 and 1910.

Also attesting to great age is the style of the connectors, one side of which swivels while the other stays fixed, and these bear unusual markings, too: an "S" within a diamond shape, which is an early sterling silver hallmark.

The four faces are identical, styled in a shield shape measuring 5/8 of an inch by 1/2 inch. Within their ornate demi-lune edges, carved with stylized flowers that suggest Art Nouveau, an engraved pattern like pinstripes frames central plaques meant to be monogrammed, if you like. Since the previous owners didn't do so, the cufflinks are all the more giftable today.

As you probably know, Belais jewels are very diffcult to find, now that more people have discovered their quality and artistry. In my view, iit would be a sacrilege to mess these up with files and test acids, so we'll have to content ourselves with uncertainty about exact gold content. Provenance is a Midwestern estate and condition is quite good, showing no damage, just age-apropriate surface wear.
