Here's a spectacular example of World War II Americana: sterling earrings that swirl and gracefully explode into fireworks in the red, white and blue hues of Old Glory! Extremely well-made with masterful silverwork and prong-set rhinestones, these historic earrings are in fabulous condition and huge, too: 2 1/4" tall and almost 2" wide.Obviously, they'll make you the belle of the ball at any patriotic gathering, from 4th of July picnics to formal dinners.

The screw-on backs are original, right for the Retro period, as is the sleek and curvy Moderne styling. Earrings just don't get any more 1940s than these - and did you know manufacturers were forced by wartime shortages of other metals to use high-quality silver, even for costume jewels? That's why so many pieces from this era are sterling, and each of the earrings is marked such. I'm surprised to find no other marks, since these are so finely crafted. If you prefer post fasteners, your jeweler can easily make the switch.

Increasingly coveted and valuable as they approach "antique" status, World War II sweetheart jewels are particularly touching pieces of history. This one was made even more special by its owner's great care. If she wore it at all, it was rarely, and she stored it in its original presentation box covered in heavy burgundy velvet with four military stripes of gold leaf. The black velvet interior still bears its oval "Sterling Silver" sticker.

The bracelet has seven charms, spelling out MY SWEET and the word is finished with a heart. Letters are half an inch tall and the heart measures 5/8 by 5/8 inch. These hang from a sturdy chain 7 1/2 inches long, with a spring ring closure. Being about 70 years old (to date from 1942-1945, when the U.S. was at war), this wonderful vintage bracelet is barely short of antique by American 75-year standards. Its provenance is a Midwestern estate

In the 1920s, railroads opened the West to vacationers and soon the public imagination was captured by the old frontier. Zane Grey novels became best-sellers and the first cowboy movies appeared. That these hand-made silver earrings date from the Art Deco era is indicated by age-appropriate surface wear and the fact that they're stamped "Sterling" (rather than the later "925"). Each measures about 1/2" in each direction and has the screw-on fastener widely used between 1910 and 1935, when ear-piercing was considered barbaric. Of course they could be easily changed to posts.

With apologies to the purists among us, the tarnish on these delightful earrings was so heavy that I simply had to give the fronts a light polish. Most of the age patina remains in place on the reverses.
