"Who dares, wins," they say, so why not take your style to new heights this fall with our breathtaking vintage Evelyn Varon chapeau? Of cinnamon-colored "doeskin" wool felt, it's gracefully shaped in a sort of cross between a fedora, a cloche and a Garbo slouch. A lavish wheel of feathers accented by pearls adorns the longer side -- the better for casting flirtatious glances beneath. Vintage hats just don't get any more spectacular!

This one's in immaculate condition, too, although it can't be younger than mid-1960s. That's when the original owner remembers purchasing it from an upscale department store in downtown Fort Worth, Texas. Unfortunately for her, she didn't dare to wear it much, which is why it's so perfect now. It's marked with two of the most famous names in vintage headwear: Evelyn Varon, whose work is featured in the Hat Museum, and George W. Bollman, whose firm developed the wool felt "doeskin" material from which it's made. The Bollman Hat Co. has been associated with many the world's top designers and brands since early Victorian days and the firm is still operating.

By Fenn Wright & Manson, one of England's leaders in special occasion fashions since the 1970s, this dreamy see-through jacket of coral organza combines a look of pure romance with all the proper details. Notice the shapely seaming, graceful lapels and double cuffs with shimmering faux-moonstone buttons in a slightly lighter shade of melon.

Sheer jackets of this type, tied on with enormous bows, were style essentials in Europe during the late 1980s and very early 1990s. (I'm not sure if they were also worn in the U.S., since I was in Britain then.) They're fabulous over slip dresses and a wonderful way of fluffing up just about any outfit for an evening event or a daytime gala like a wedding. In the latter case, they can give you decent cover for the ceremony, allowing you to wear something that might otherwise be a little too bare until the reception.

Size is marked small, but obviously the shape is highly adaptable. I'd say it could be worn by anyone up to about a size 10. Condition of the wrap is fabulous -- it can't have been worn much. New party tops and wraps by FW&M sell in the $150 - $200 range, by the way, so this is a great bargain for that label.

Worthy of the gals in "Grease," this outfit is just what you need for any fifties-style event -- or just for the fun of wearing Retro. The skirt's a full circle of metallic patterned fabric so crisp it can stand up by itself and the jacket is a classic zip-on windbreaker, also very crisp. I doubt these treasures have been worn more than a couple of times, if that.

The skirt is ballerina-length (30 inches) on a 26-inch buttoned waistband with zipper below. No tags are on that, but the jacket is marked Barbara Rogers for Power Chute. Size small and hand-washable, the jac may be of a somewhat later date, but its style is pure 50s and the color and texture match to the skirt is excellent. Just add a top with a turtleneck or a Peter Pan collar, bobby socks and loafers or Oxfords to complete the 50s look. The jacket will be very useful as a separate piece, too.

Most of us avoid new furs now -- I haven't bought any for more than 30 years -- but I can't justify leaving vintage pieces to rot, unworn. They're warm, for one thing, and we still find them beautiful or faux-fur wouldn't be so popular.

It would be a great pity to waste a hat as glamorous as this towering pile of fluff. The look is positively Zhivago! And it covers your entire head, all the way down to the nape of your neck, so nothing could be cozier. Fit shouldn't be a problem -- it's fine on a standard-sized head with lots of hair (mine) -- and its condition is superb.

The hat reached us with just one tag, declaring Italian origin, so its maker is unknown, as is its age. We'd be safe to say late 20th century. Provenance is a Pennsylvania estate.

Elsewhere online, these big, showy red ones seem to be going for $300-325, but we got a great deal on this beauty and we like sharing.

Although many of us wouldn't buy new furs now, to avoid encouraging the trade, making good use of vintage pieces strikes me as both ethical and sensible.

If you agree that their warmth shouldn't be wasted, this fluffy mid-century chapeau may appeal to you. It dates from the 1950s or early 1960s, but is in pristine condition. Even its lining is beautiful, made of luxurious black fabric that's ridged like grosgrain ribbon.

Size is on the small side. I can get it on, but not down as far as it really should go. My forehead is 22.5 inches around and the maximum this hat would fit properly is about 21.5 inches. Assuming it's big enough for your purposes, this is a marvelous bargain.

Like many people, I've had second thoughts about furs. I wouldn't personally buy, sell or wear new ones (despite defending the rights of those who do). Where I part company with the anti-fur purists is when it comes to vintage pieces. Making good use of them strikes me as both ethical and sensible.

If you agree that their warmth shouldn't go to waste, this vintage headband may appeal to you. The fur is soft and supple, with luster and without tears. The fleecy white lining is unlabeled for maker or size, so we measured and found the band is 23 inches in circumference, just right for an average head. Width is 5 inches, age is unknown and provenance is a collection in Ontario.

Evening bags by Mayor are definitely not thick on the ground. I wasn't able to locate any others online - besides which ours is perfect, apparently never used and still snapped into its glamorous burgundy case of velvety suede that bears the maker's name and logo. The heavy metal mesh is as supple as fabric and lined with ivory silk. The pouch measures about 5" x 4 1/4" and closes with a double chain 6 1/2" long, with beautifully shaped carrying rings an inch round on each end.

If you want a fine early 20th century mesh purse more exceptional the widely available ones by Whiting & Davis and Mandalian, this is your obvious choice. Probable dating is the early 1920s (dawn of the Art Deco era) and provenance is an estate in Florida, where the Mayor's company moved at the height of Deco mania. No jeweler is more closely associated with Deco style than Samuel Getz of Mayor's.

If you crave that bold, sexy '80s look, why not wear the real thing, rather than a new-yesterday knockoff? Vividly scarlet, this "Dynasty" era dazzler has an elegantly draped peplum overskirt and a ruched front bodice ornamented with a transparent Art Nouveau butterfly that's loaded with white pearls, red sequins and bugle beads. Ruffles supported by an underlay of red petticoat net appear both fore and after and the skirt is slit, so you can walk and dance easily. The low-cut back closes with a short zipper. Length is just below the knee.

The label of this gorgeous gown identifies it as a California-made creation "For David Howard" from the "Climax" line by Karen Okada. The fabric is acetate that feels like satin taffeta: rich and slightly crispy. No size label is present, but the dress looks like it would fit most small women (sizes 2, 4 and probably 6). Its only point of close fit is the waistline, which measures 26 inches. Condition is so good that it can't have been worn much.

Madame Alexander dolls were among the best things about my childhood. Their beauty and refinement probably influenced me than anything else, except books. These little treasures teach lessons of taste and care, without a word spoken. That point is well illustrated by the display of Princess Anne’s toys at Sandringham, which includes a 1950s “Elise” just like mine -- obviously played with often, but with respect and love. Because nobody who owns an Alexander doll really wants to give it up, some of the finest vintage examples remain off the market for a lifetime and those that do become available are highly prized.

This charming vintage "Snow White" from Madame Alexander's enchanting Storybook Collection -- part of the 1968-1985 Classic Series -- stands 14 inches tall and is in virtually untouched condition. Always a display piece, never played with, she still wears her tag (slightly curled with age) and resides within her original box, which still contains tissue and the neck support. It shows little wear and bears the highly collectible model number 1555.

Our little beauty has a Mary Anne face, still as vividly colorful as when it was painted. Her black hair remains perfectly styled, parted in the middle and combed to the back, where it curls. Her sleep eyes function perfectly and the lashes are real, not molded, amplified by gracefully painted eyelashes below and to the sides of her eyes. Dressed fully in gossamer white, with silver trimming on her cape and shimmering silver shoes, she's clearly a dream come true for a lucky little girl or grown-up doll collector. Provenance is an East Coast estate.

The Hachi name, as you may remember, is closely associated with the late Princess Diana. A beaded evening gown created for her by the Japanese designer took top price (more than $70,000) at the personal apparel auction she was organizing at the time of her death. She wore that dress often between 1983 and 1989. This said, any beaded dress by Hachi is of more than idle interest -- and ours happens to have the very same beaded sunburst pattern that features on Diana's gown at shoulder and hip. (Run a search for "The Hachi Dress" to see what I mean; there's even a Princess Di doll in that fabulous dress.)

Our elegant example of Hachi's artistry surely dates from the same period as Diana's. It's a sleek 48-inch column of silk crepe with a diagonally cut dropped waist. Within the center of the neck, there's a fabric-covered weight to ensure that it drapes properly -- lovely detail, but the loveliest is of course the giant beaded sunburst that extends for more than a foot over the right shoulder.

There's no size tag, which leads me to believe the dress was custom-made. Its bust measures 34 inches, narrowing to a waist-skimming 28 inches and flaring to more than 40 at the hip, because of the gathers. Outer sleeve length is 22. Sizing should work for most small women (US 2, 4 and possibly 6), but do please check your measurements to be certain. There's no lining, since this is a fabric you want to flow very smoothly. The spicy color sizzles somewhere between cinnamon and clove.

These exciting vintage boots with stiletto heels are a lot more Vixen than Western. Besides the pizzazz of their 3.25-inch heels, they mix three different leathers in slightly different shades of brown: Reptile and suede trim the butter-soft smooth leather that slouches gracefully for a bit of "pirate" swagger.

Representing the height of style in the "Dallas" and "Dynasty" era, these beauties will be perfect with the 1980s revival fashions so trendy today (not to mention with your skinny jeans). They've been so lightly worn that this is how they look without even getting a polish and brush-up! Linings are fully intact.

The boots reached us, fittingly enough, from a Dallas collection and were quite expensive when new. Outer soles (leather, of course) are marked 5B and inner soles (likewise leather) are tagged Wild Pair. Early examples of this fashion-forward brand have become highly collectible. I've seen 1980s Wild Pair boots selling for close to $300 elsewhere online.

Engraved with an engine-turned herringbone pattern on both front and back, this gleaming goldtone case from one of the world's finest makers is in superbly giftable condition and even has a monogram plaque awaiting the initials of someone special.

The interior is also textured and, for yet another touch of elegance, there's soft green felt on the reverse of the holder bar - which is spring-activated and works perfectly, as does the case's snap closure.

Size is 4" x 3", so it will hold cigarettes of any length, depending on which direction they're inserted. Of course, it can take on other jobs, now that so few of us are smoking. It's a very stylish way to stash business cards and/or some folding money and a credit card, when you don't want to carry a bulky wallet in your pocket or bag.

The look is pure Art Deco - fittingly for a company that began in 1928 and remains inspired by the early modernist aesthetic - and clearly this is an accessory equally suitable for a man or a woman. The prior owner recalls acquiring it around 1970, so it would have been produced in the late 1960s or early 1970s. The holder bar is engraved with Colibri's "flames" logo, rather than the later lion or hummingbird, and the word Japan. It comes with its original sleeve of soft black fabric, which has kept the case looking fantastic for all these years.

A glamorous Colibri lighter from the same period will be listed soon; it's a slender, long tubular type in matte black with brass fittings and a pen-clip. If you're interested in both items, we can work out special pricing.

Keep Ginny's shoes tidy with this vivid tartan vinyl shoe bag - in mint condition even after almost 60 years! From an extensive 1-owner doll collection, it's shown as item #842 in the 1954 "Now I Walk" catalogue. You can read "Ginny's Shoe Bag" at the top (though my photo doesn't show it *G*). Hanging holes have never been perforated. Vintage Vogue closet accessories don't come any nicer than this.

Like other Ginny items, this will also fit Alexanderkins (Madame Alexander's smallest dolls). Their clothes and shoes are the same size.

If you collect these wonderful small dolls from long ago, you know it's a huge challenge to find authentic footwear for them. That makes this group from one estate a great find. Included are ice skates and roller skates from the Ginny line by Vogue Dolls, plus pretty pink ballet slippers from Madame Alexander and red cowgirl boots that I can't identify for sure. All will fit both Ginny and the Alexanderkins.

The things are in reasonably nice condition, considering that they're toys 60 years old. The white ice skates could use a gentle cleaning, the slippers need their ribbons reattached and the boots have frayed edges that a trim with sharp manicure scissors should take care of neatly. You may also want to clean the rust off the roller skate wheels, using sandpaper or a suitable polish, but I personally enjoy the patina. With the footwear comes a round carrier box that held one pair of skates, when new; it's rather battered now, but good to have.

Looking like it's never been worn even once, this exotic vintage purple tunic would be a fabulous beach coverup -- or a top to wear with jeans and shorts, if you're a bit daring. It's lavished with fish in golden glitter, finished with gold and green beads tied into points at the knees and patterned with loads of sexy peek-a-boo slashes.

The "deconstructed" look makes me date this treasure to the late 1980s or early 1990s. Along with the two huge fish, a graceful undersea plant and the word "Bahamas" also appear in glitter. The tag (so crisp it's like new) reads: ARAWAK T Neely's of Nassau in the Bahamas 100% Cotton XLong. Total length is about 31 inches. Sleeves are raglan-style, finished in points with knots. The cotton knit is good and thick, with a rich, high-quality feel. This must have been expensive originally. Provenance is a New Mexico estate.

Sometimes we can all use a little inspiration and this set of three audio cassettes supplies six hours' worth! (Each tape runs 120 minutes.) Produced by Nightingale-Conant Corporation, the masters of motivation, the series titles are "Career Success: Managing Your Way to the Top", "Raising Your Self-Esteem: Feeling Good About You" and "Healthy Ways to Deal with Stress". Copyright date is 1991. Evidently these are fairly rare, since my searches online turned up reference only to a few library copies. The cases show their age a bit, but are still serviceable, and the tapes are in great playable condition. Provenance is a New Mexico estate.

Want some gloves that will do lots more than keep your hands warm? These terrific designs from the 1940s or early 1950s are loaded with Retro style! Both are sized for a petite woman and came from the same Texas estate.

The brown ones with the huge buttons and lavish seam detail look like suede, but are of suede-finished fabric. And their condition is absolutely amazing, as if they've never been worn.

The second pair are of buttery soft black kidskin with cutwork wrist-bands of fawn kid, each secured with a black leather button. Just a few little scuffs are present and one wrist has a teensy red dot on it. With a cleaning and polish, they'd probably be like new.

This dazzling strapless evening top lavished with large gold sequins is by designer Gina Bacconi, under her "Creazioni Originali" label. She now creates elegant party, evening and special occasion fashions for Shubette of London and her collection is sold in upscale shops throughout Europe.

Underneath the glitz, there's smocked gold fabic with a powerful stretch and beautiful lace loops are provided for hanging. The tag calls this a U.S. 8 (U.K. 10), but it's really more for a U.S. size 2 to 6. It's about 12 inches long and, unstretched, measures 22 inches at the bust and 20 inches at the waist. Stretched to the max, it will fit about a 34-35 inch bust and 29-30 inch waist. The prior owner acquired it in London during the 1980s and wore it only once, so it's like new.

With metallics being so trendy today -- as well as 1980s-inspired fashions -- you couldn't own anything more stylish. It would be a fabulous way to dress up a suit.
