Based on the Edwardian influence apparent in its restrained size and openwork pattern, this lovely silver brooch appears to date from early in the Art Deco period (circa 1920-15). It's an extremely high quality piece, quite weighty for its size and set with rows and rows of sparkling marcasites around a highly polished central black stone (which I believe is natural jet or onyx). In exquisite condition, this dainty pin measures about 1 1/2" wide by a little more than 3/4" tall. It came from the estate of an elderly Englishwoman but is probably French, since England hadn't then gone metric and the Continental dimensions are a straightforward 3.5 cm by 2 cm.
