Superb earrings will always be the Holy Grail of antique jewelry, since it's so easy to lose one -- or, if they're really special (like these), for them to be separated into pendants for the sake of two heirs. To our great good fortune, this magnificent pair has survived together over the past century, in immaculate condition.
Handmade around 1905, when the jeweler's art was at its apex, they feature two large aquamarines that are startlingly beautiful, both for their octagonal emerald-shaped cut and their water-blue color. The gems are too early to have been heat-treated, as has been customary since circa 1920 to intensify hue. That they're natural makes them exceptionally rare and lovelier with platinum than a more assertive shade could ever be. Mounted with them are a total of 14 single-cut diamonds, 7 in each. All stones show very good proportion, symmetry and polish, according to a nationally esteemed gemologist.
The exquisite, articulated settings are equal to the stones. They swing and sway with every motion. Note particularly the millegrain surfaces. Millegraining is a highly demanding technique developed in Edwardian times to add extra dimension and sparkle. The bezels into which the gems were fitted were given deckled edges overlaid with tiny ornamental beads of metal. Trying to duplicate such refined workmanship today, if it could even be done at all, would cost the earth.
The earrings measure 1 1/2 inches long and have threaded posts with screw-on clutches for security. Those were a significant innovation in their day and are quite a lot sturdier than our modern ones. Total weight is 2.9 pennyweights, including approximately 2 carats of aquamarines and 0.16 in diamonds. An incidental benefit of choosing antique diamonds is that we can be certain they aren't "blood diamonds" funding African insurgencies and even terrorism.
Obviously these earrings would be a gift worthy of a landmark occasion: a wedding, the birth of a child, a major anniversary or job promotion. As you know if your taste favors Edwardian gemstone earrings of top quality, they're so popular among discerning collectors that real ones rarely reach the open market. Even crude replicas made around 1980 are fetching more than $2000 now.
