Almost 100 years ago, a young Englishman - likely a poet, himself - presented "An Anthology of Modern Verse" as a gift. A parting gift, we gather. Tragically (or at least melodramatically), he wrote "Remembrance: I shall remember thee with tears."
The volume, acquired at a major London book fair, is beautifully made, its blue fabric still richly colored and gilded in the early Art Deco manner. The 240 pages are high in fiber content and softly deckle-edged. Spine has sunned and pages have somewhat darkened, but overall condition is good, relative to age. Measuring a hand-pleasing 7" tall, this charming book was printed by Methuen & Co. and is on the verge of becoming antique by the European 100-year rule -- substantially more strict than our 75-year standard.
Fans of poetry will still enjoy reading this book, which contains contributions by poets now recognized as great, as well as many by writers consigned to time, rather than timelessness, but interesting nonetheless.
