A trendy gift when presented in June of 1895 to E. M. Lymon by H.B., this wonderful antique anthology of Georgian and Victorian verse remains in remarkably fine condition, its silky fabric covering and elaborate gilding still vivid. Surprisingly, the spine hasn't sunned and the pages are only slightly foxed here and there, mostly at the edges.
In an easy-to-carry 7 1/2 x 5" format, the volume contains a hefty 560 pages. Gorgeous engravings (145 of them) accompany many of the poems selected and edited by the Rev. Robert Aris Willmott. Publisher was Frederick Warne & Co. of London and New York -- and Frederick certainly did excellent work. All books should be this well-made! It found us at a major London book fair and is a fascinating read, as well as a stunning artifact.
