Our surprisingly sweet-faced cobra stands 9 3/4" tall and is about 6 3/4" wide - plenty big enough to make a major decor statement. Dating from around 1920, right on the cusp of Art Nouveau and earliest Art Deco, this sculpture shows both influences. A specialist dealer in England dated the piece and identified the artist as Giannelli; I don't actually see a signature. The snake is a chalk figure, I believe, on a base of bronze. Condition is extremely good. I've touched up a few tiny white spots, but the ebonized finish is more than 99% original.
To me, this work is the absolute essence of Temptation. Who wouldn't say, "Yes, please," if offered an apple along with this smile?
