Stunning Faux Garnet Fringe Necklace & Earrings Set
The "archeological" look of this exciting demi-parure suggests both the Regency period (circa 1800) and the Classical Revival of Victorian times. In my opinion, however, it's most likely from the 1920s, when the touring exhibition of King Tut's treasures sparked another craze for jewelry with an ancient appearance. It may be older than that, based on the straight hook earring fasteners, Greek key pattern of the chain and certain other details of fabrication, but we like to be conservative in dating.

Regardless of exactly when it was made, the set clearly has some age -- along with a *lot* of glamor. Perfect with the "goddess" fashions favored by top designers today, these jewels appear to be of pot metal with a silver finish. The metal's weight makes it drape perfectly. The many brilliantly faceted crystals, probably Czech, have the luscious deep red color of Bohemian garnets.

The earrings hang about 1 1/4 inch below the ears and the necklace can be adjusted in length from 14 inches to a little more than 17. Condition is lovely, actually enhanced by age-related surface wear that makes the metal look like richly patinated sterling. Provenance is a Louisiana estate, so I wouldn't be surprised if this set came from France.

Thanks for looking!
