A large and absolutely incredible pipe ashtray with cork tapper, Italian, dating from the 1950’s. Made of pottery and covered all over with gilt leather, beautifully patinated. Designed as a bird’s head, faintly resembling the Egyptian god Thoth. The gilt leather with impressed modernist non-figurative decoration, intended to look Egyptian or African in style. Unsigned. An English Bursley Ware bowl by Charlotte Rhead, 1920's, of square shape. Slip-glaze decoration of the Carnations pattern in blue and gilt on off-white, marbled ground. Factory mark and TL 40 = pattern number and the mark of the painter who applied the relief glaze colour, Mary Powell. Height: "2 ¼ / 6 cm, width (diagonally): "4 ¾ / 12 cm. Condition: fine. Please note that all the little dots and accents that unfortunately look brown on the photos are really in gilt.
