A pair of Japanese late Edo (mid 19th century) plates. Over glaze decoration in iron red, aubergine, black, green and gilt of wise men and banana trees. In the centre Kylin, the mythical animal, in under glaze blue. The back with auspicious symbols. Diameter "8 ½ / 21 cm. Condition: both plates with some wear to the decoration, one with a chip to underside of rim (cf. pictures).

Three Shishi lions or “Foo dogs”, the guardian animals that used to be placed outside temples and imperial buildings. Two of the three originally formed the knobs of urn lids, the third and smallest is a lid from a miniature incense vessel or urn. Two with aubergine and green/turquoise glaze, the third in crackle-glaze gilt. Height of biggest Foo dog "2 ¾ / 7 cm, of smallest "1/ 2,5 cm. Condition: the angry, middle-sized dog has got his right back leg restored.

Two pretty vases by Samson, in the Famille rose palette, imitating the style of Chinese export porcelain of the mid-18th century, the Qianlong period. The two have been used as a pair, even though the gilt borders are not quite identical. Both marked with an over-glaze pseudo-Chinese mark in iron red, typical of Samson. Height: "4 ¾ / 12 cm. Condition: minimal nick to underside of foot rim to one vase, otherwise fine.
