Many Staffordshire figures were modelled after well-known contemporary characters. This is Cobbler Jobson at work, a small cat peeping out from under his stool. The Cobbler appeared in a popular English farce first played in the 18th century. He was reproduced all through the next hundred years, by Samuel Hall, Wood & Caldwell and others. This is an early version. Interesting marks to base. Height "6/ 15,5 cm. Condition: old restorations and a firing crack to one leg (cf pics.).
