Interesting enamel box from the time of the Seven Years’ War 1756 – 1763. The exterior with two soldiers in the uniform of the Austrian Althann Dragoon regiment, the interior depicting their commander, Count von Daun, who led the Althann Dragoons at the battle of Kolin, where the Prussian army was defeated and forced to retire eastwards. The long war also generated propaganda and political satire in writing as well as in the decorative arts. The motif on the inside of the lock might be translated as the victorious von Daun taming the Prussian eagle, now transformed into a harmless singing bird. On the outside the little bird is being caged by the two dragoons. Length "5½/ 13,8 cm, width "3½/ 9 cm and height "2/ 5 cm. Condition: “clobbered” repair to the lid (cf. pics).
