Sterling silver sets and separates one wiggly agate from the other in this, one of the most rare forms in Scottish Agate jewelry. The snake, completely original, created c. 1860 was made by the jeweler. first by designing the silver in its serpentine form. Chiseling the agates was no simple feat as they are sculpted to curve and fit within their silver boundaries. The stones are rich with natural color. I am especially fond of the light colored agate at the head of the snake. Scottish agate jewelry has a long history, first worn hundreds of years ago to identity the various clans. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert so admired Scottish tradition that they steeped themselves in it dressing in Scottish clothing when at their castle in Balmoral. Five grand inches in length, this extraordinary specimen of Scottish jewelry history will excite collectors of antique agate and those who love the drama of an unusual antique brooch. Perfect condition. From the Glorious Antique Jewelry Collection.

Set in 14kt gold, the agates were cut and set with a master's hand. Carved out of and polished from larger stones, the jeweler took the time to reach artistic heights by matching each stone for color, each size and every glow. The usual brown and black agate is here more orange and black with white. I kept returning to look at it, captivated by this simple form so beautifully embellished. A wondrous piece of jewelry for the religious or all interested in jewelry history of the ages. Perfect Condition. From the Glorious Jewelry Collection

The form and condition of these Victorian earrings is perfect from top orb to clamper below. Smooth shining bells, the symbol of friendship and peace are made from Jet from the city of Whitby England. They will move as you do but will not put weight on your ears or cause ringing to disconcert you. The shepherd hook ear wires are 15kt gold. The town of Whitby was the primary source of jet jewelry that became a court necessity when Prince Albert died unexpectedly. Queen Victoria would allow no color jewelry other than black in her presence. Jet then became an object of fashion for the populace, creating a need and source of income for the town of Whitby and English jewelers. c1860-70#3536

One of the many design characteristics in 1870 Great Britain was whimsy and humor, both of which are present in these belted banded agate earrings. A buckle on the ears or wrist, a corset on a bracelet, bangles that appear to be shirt cuffs with ruffles, zippers and straps as elements of design on lockets, birds nests hanging from earrings are but a few examples of daytime jewelry, both fun and serious, that represented a design of the era. The fascination and appreciation of nature was strong at this time. Here, the careful cut, and polish of banded agate honors that natural bent. The agate stone with black, brown and white coloration was cut shaped into orbs masterfully making the colors equal in each. Gold ear wires were placed on straps of gilt metal, the process now known as vermeil. The top layer of the metal is gold. The earrings are strong, original and unique in the world of design today. Excellent condition. 1 1/2 inches in length. English origin.

A delight in 18kt gold is the oh so popular Victorian serpent motif. I have seen women wear three on one hand!. Serpent rings were gifted for engagement and friendship. Here is a cheerful example as the serpent appears to be smiling. Why not, she ( my choice of gender) is a symbol of eternal bond and affection. This ring is particularly comfortable and graceful as the coils are spaced apart. You will find that your eyes travel to your finger in admiration. Size 6. Immaculate condition

The bloodstone spinning section of this gold engraved fob is sprinkled with red spots and is bevelled creating a higher center. This fob is handsome. Outstanding is more accurate as the repousee engraving on the gold and the proportion of the whole is beautiful indeed. The puffy engraving covers the gold other than the top suspension ring. Puffiness is accomplished by pushing the gold into design from the back. Multiple uses for a fob today are wearing one on a watch chain, suspending it on a chain creating a pendant, or attaching it to a charm bracelet. The condition is superb. English c. 1860-70

The fine quality of the above natural pearl and banded agate locket made me stop in my tracks when I glanced in a London shop window. The border glows with the luster of the pearls in their tiara settings of high carat gold. A large convex natural agate is set center as if on a pedestal. Victorians were passionate about nature and the use of natural materials is an example of that passion. They had the knack of cutting the banded stones in the way that made them unique jewels. The locket back calls for your keepsake making this pendant your personal treasure. The chain, offered separately, has been sold. Locket in Perfect Original Condition

Prisms of pique work were carefully incised with flower forms that then were filled with silver and gold. This is delicate work that was performed by artists in the latter quarter of the 19th century, c. 1870 most often in France or Russia. This art form was done for a short period of the Victorian era and as there is no fine reproduction today, These are medium length earrings, wearable and very light in weight. The condition is perfect.

Visually striking on the finger, this fine cameo is set in 18kt gold bezel with a 9kt shank. Psyche is finely carved from the white of the onyx and rises from the black background. This detailed miniature work was a talent of Italian jewelers. It amazes me how the carving is so delicate as to create hair on the head of a figure or drapes in clothing while bringing out one color only from the stone. Dating to 1870-80. Origin Italy. Fun and easily wearable, this pair of Victorian earrings is made with dangling orbs of white enamel wrapped in golden vines. The vines terminate in turquoise floral buds. At the earlobe is a small flower also centered by a turquoise. Light in color that is lively, the earrings are light on the ear as well. The gold is the English standard 15kt. They bring the cheer of an ice cream treat with sprinkles and are in original and in perfect condition.

A chunky rock crystal, clear and pure, is home to s a witch's heart of natural pearls. At its center sits a dot of turquoise that hypnotically holds the eye. The bale forms a flowing gold bow with its ribbons sitting atop the pendant like a crown. This heart is grand and puffy, one of the most exciting rock crystal hearts I have found. We photograph it on a ribbon. A lovely Victorian gold chain will be a beautiful addition. Ask to see our chain selection. The heart is English in origin c. 1880.

SOLD. MANY THANKS
Old mine cut diamonds add a pinch of spice to a lovely pair of Victorian earrings that are timeless.Take note please that the darkened areas shown in the photograph are not at all visible in the earrings but an exaggeration of the camera magnification. The earrings are European in origin, a strikingly interesting texture and in excellent condition. Light on the ear they measure a petite 15/16 ths of an inch in length although they appear grander because of the nice size of the bottom orbs. Definitely a pair to wear constantly.

Gilding adds dramatic interest as does the frame around the multi-banded agate bracelet. The gold does not tarnish and has never needed polish of any kind. Not at all delicate, of sound construction and beautifully made, the bracelet stands on its own for daily wear. It is a good example of antique jewelry appreciated for its design, style, condition and workmanship. Much time and thought was put into design and manufacturing even after the industrial revolution. The English did not judge their jewelry by gold content or gemstones alone. Many, many alternative materials were pricey and a la mode such as pinchbeck, gilded metal, cut steel, paste, gutta percha, vulcanite and bog oak, This bracelet is in excellent condition, comfortable and handsomely dramatic.

Cross hatch engraving represents the scales on the gentle snakes lovingly knotted on this ring. The ring is coiled thrice in back while on top of the finger one snake is crowned with a ruby, the second with a rose diamond. Like a love knot, there is no beginning or end which is why the serpent coiled in this way represents infinite love. This is a symbolic ring for man or woman that sends the message of a strong bond between two people. It is in excellent condition and is currently a size 9. The ring can be sized by a fine bench jeweler.
