|A hardstone carnelian, saturated with color, was made completely by the hands of a talented American goldsmith who is schooled in ancient jewelry techniques. It is the ancient techniques that brought this jewel to our attention and gave us cause to include this piece in the "Ancient Modern" category we have begun to display. The Greek key design around the stone is a pattern used in Greek art and pottery from historic times. The small dots of gold appliqued on the shoulders of the oval were done using the ancient Egyptian art of granulation, a process that adheres gold to gold without solder. From the shoulders a braided shank encircles the finger and brings additional texture to an otherwise simple design. The carnelian is in a closed setting of high carat gold. Closed settings were typical in Georgian and early Victorian jewels. The rich hardstone, in its gold surround, is an imposing inch high. It weighs approximately 6 cts. This ring is sizable by our expert jeweler. It is presently a size 6 to 6 1/2. The condition is gorgeous.|
