|Tones of red and white are set for dramatic effect in our garnet and diamond Victorian Locket. At center is a heart shaped rich red foiled garnet, the color of fine bordeaux. The contrasting surround is a wreath and bow of white rose cut diamonds that have held their original spark. Diamonds are set in silver and gold. Little metal is apparent as the stones take center stage. The locket back is gold that is engraved with the words "Ernie w Lorie 23 Nov. '55. Additional drama reaches the eye with the use of volume. The rounded garnet and locket back rise out of the background 1/4 of an inch as if leaning from a window. Atop the bow is the original bale that permits the owner to slip through a ribbon or chain of diamonds or gold and fasten about the neck. It too is set with rose diamonds. Victorian jewelry expressed sentiment and frequently represented the natural world. The wreath is a vine of flowers and leaves. The garnet heart a red berry in its midst. This Victorian jewel is one that antique jewelry collectors long for. The construction and quality make for a very exciting find. It is a gift to wear often, adore, appreciate and preserve. c. 1850.
