This is a spectacular Japanese lacquer tray from the Meiji period. We believe it to be the work of Shirayama Shosai (1853-1923), one of the greatest of all Japanese Lacquer Artists. It measures 13 1/4 inches by 9 ½ inches. The workmanship on the butterflies or moths is as exquisite of any detail you would see on the finest Satsuma pieces.
