It was love at first sight when I saw this lovely transitional Victorian demi parure comprising a pendant brooch and a pair of earrings . This set has everything: the naturalist aesthetic, beautiful organic materials, and delicate design. Natural themes of flora and fauna were extremely popular with the Victorians, and they are both represented here in the pink lilies surmounted by snakes among the leaves. The materials are consistent with the natural theme: the lilies and floral surmounts are a gorgeous pink coral; the snakes and leaves are seed pearls. The design – sinuous and twining – documents the transition from a Victorian love of natural forms to lighter nouveau fantasies. The details on these pieces are amazing: the snakes which crawl over the central blossoms have tiny garnet eyes, and the blossoms have pearl stamens. Good condition: one chip to side bottom edge of brooch; three seed pearls lacking; signs of wear to the reverses. Early posts on the earrings. Brooch measures 2”; earrings are 1 1/2”.
