| Portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a very stern-looking woman, by British artist William Grimaldi (1751-1830). She wears a white dress and fichu under a blue, fur-trimmed coat, and a ribbon-trimmed bonnet over her powdered hair. The portrait is signed and dated along the left edge “Grimaldi 1799” and is set in a gold frame, the domed reverse of which features a sheaf of hair gathered with seed pearls and gold wire, laid on lovely blue glass. The painter was the 8th Marques Grimaldi, a descendant of the noble Genoan Grimaldi family and the Merovingian Kings of France and Princes of Monaco. He was miniature painter to the Duke and Duchess of York, George III and George IV. Condition is very good: some pearls, wire and hair are loose from the arrangement on the reverse. Measures 3” by 2 ˝”. | ||||||
