| English portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a gentleman with a mole below his moth, circa the turn of the 18th century. The portrait is attributed to Peter Paillou, Jr. (1757-after 1831), who practiced his art in London and Glasgow. The sunset background and smoothly painted face are characteristic of Paillou. The reverse features a sheaf of hair gathered and held by a tiny gold ring, surrounded by a seed pearl bow. Many of the seed pearls have come loose; there’s some water damage to the edges on both sides, and a few scratched to the glass, but the gent is in lovely shape! Set in gold (at least 14k) locket frame. Measures 3 1/3” by 2 5/8”. | |||||
