A portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of Mary Cox, attributed to Penelope Carwardine, ca 1765. Mary wears a décolleté blue dress with white lace trim and a white aigrette in her upswept hair. The gilt frame is inscribed on the reverse “Mary Cox/ Wife of/Joshua Cox, Esq/father of Richard Cox, Esq”. According to Daphne Foskett, Carwardine was born circa 1730. With a profligate father and six younger sisters, she took up miniature painting as a respectable way to earn a living, but when she married, in 1772, she stopped painting. Set in a gilt frame. Excellent condition. Measures 1 3/4”.
