| Anglo-Indian School Portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of a lady, circa 1840. This is an extraordinary piece: it’s a portrait miniature and a memorial miniature, housed in a parquetry box. The miniature is wonderful: a lady, seated, wears a black dress with a white lace collar, a black ribbon choker, and a charming white lace cap bedecked with flowers. The detail is super, especially the jewelry – she wears a two-strand gold necklace with a sapphire and diamond heart pendant, and a long gold lorgnette chain. The memorial miniature, set inside the lid, is a terrific scene in hair: a willow over a tomb which reads “JK/In Memory of” set in a 3-D hair landscape. There’s a trade label in the reverse which reads “Mr. G. DEWDNEY/Artist in Hair/(from Paris,)/172,/Fenchurch Street,/3 doors from/Gracechurch St.,/London.” The box features inlaid ivory, wood and cut-steel decoration. Condition of the miniature is good – the colors are wonderfully fresh, though it’s a little warped. The hair memorial is in very good condition, with just a little lifting. The box has areas of missing lengths of ivory and cut steel stars. The inlaid mounts around the miniature are loose. New velvet interior. Portrait measures 4” by 2 7/8”; the memorial measures 3” by 2 1/2”; the box measures 5 5/8” by 4 7/8”. | ||||||||
