| An incomparable Georgian mourning brooch depicting a shepherdess and a lamb, circa 1780. What make this brooch so remarkable are the three-dimensional construction, the unusual material, and the touching period symbolism. The shepherdess and lamb are composed of white molded paste, probably papier mache. The shepherdess’ arm and lamb’s foreleg are actually raised from the background, as is the tree, which is made of the hair of the deceased. The shepherdess holds a gold wire crook in one hand and a wreath made of hair in the other; she is going to place the wreath on the lamb’s head. The wreath symbolizes a bond with the deceased; the lamb symbolizes a child or young person, who is memorialized in the inscription on the reverse: “Sarah Wood/died 26 Nov/1791/Aged 20 yrs.” Rose gold frame with beaded border and bright cut engraving on the reverse. Excellent condition. Measures 1 7/8”. | |||||||
