Jean Pouyat, Limoges, Covered Butter
Quantity Available: One Pattern: Floral with Gold Accent made in Limoges France Item Description, Size and Color: Covered Butter with drain tray insert. As for measurements, the dish is 4 inches high including the handle. It is 5 3/8 across the bottom of the dome. The base is 7 inches across not including handles. The drain insert is 4 1/8 in. across. About the drain tray insert…“Before refrigeration, butter for a formal dinner party would have been molded into a fancy butter mold. To make it harden and take the shape it would have been packed in ice. When removed from the mold, the butter being very cold would sweat and form liquid condensation (water). In order to keep the butter from sitting in the water there would be a liner in the bottom of the butter dish for the liquid to drain through and a small cupped collection area in the base for the water.” …….Contributed by my good friend “Pam” who knows more about Victorian wares that I ever will. Item Condition: This item is excellent condition. This means there are no chips, nics, cracks or stains. There is very light wear to the gold on the handles and the dome handle. Date Range of Manufacture: Pouyat Family, Limoges, France The underglaze mark was used between 1890 – 1932. Have been unable to determine the top glaze mark with “W” but assume it was a high end distributor. In the ribbon of the wreath it reads New York, Paris, Philadelphia. Category: Elegant Victorian Porcelain Shipping Weight & Packing: 3 pounds |
