|Ralston Crawford (American ,1906-1978), "S. S. De Grasse" 1952 , 4 Color Lithograph from the original edition of 200 ,measuring 15" x 22". A very rare lithograph , by American Modernist master. Vibrant colors and excellent condition , a fine impression of this iconic print. Signed and inscribed 'EPREUVE D'ARTISTE' and numbered V/XX by the artist in pencil. Note: The S.S. De Grasse was a steamship with long an colorful history. Operating from New York to Le Havre, she was seized by Germans in 1943 and sunk by gunfire. In 1952, at the time when Crawford made this print, she was transferred to the Caribbean. A number of artists and writers have memorialized the ship, including Robert Nichols, who wrote a poem in 1950 entitled, "Sailing on the S.S. De Grasse." Crawford has reduced the steamship to a modernist collage of circles and triangles that feels very jazzy and streamlined, like the ship itself.|
