Colima Pottery Seated Hunchback Dwarf, Protoclassic, ca. 100 BCE - 250 CE. The dwarf revered by community as a Shaman with magical capabilities. Muscular hunchback with rounded spinal projection, arms extended out from the sides, the face with coffee-bean eyes, lips tightly closed, and spout flaring from his head. Painted in reddish-brown. Height 11 1/2 inches. Professional repair to shoulder but in excellent condition. Ex: Sotheby's New York. In his book, The Maya's Own Words, Thomas Ballantine Irving translates a passage in the Popol Vuh, the creation myth of the K'iche' Maya, regarding a creation of beings prior to humans identified as dwarfs. Gods fashioned a race of dwarfs from mud so that the creatures would worship them. The dwarfs began to ignore their creators, so the gods turned them into hardened clay. The gods then made human beings from corn, placing smoke in the human's eyes so they would not be as clever and farsighted as the dwarfs.
