| A MESSAPIAN PAINTED KALATHOS, SECOND HALF OF 4TH CENTURY BCE. Flaring bowl decorated with applied buff painted friezes of laurel wreath around the rim interior, wavy leafy tendrils on the exterior rim, and body friezes of palmettes and leaves on the upper body, palmettes with scrolling tendrils alternating with leaves around the middle and five ivy leaves above the base. 6 7/8" high, intact and in excellent condition. A kalathos is a vase with form of top hat, used to hold wool or fruit, often as a symbol of fertility | |||||||
