From the Age of the Patriarchs. Middle Bronze Age II-B Pottery Transport Amphora with original Ladle calcified into mouth of vessel, circa 1750 - 1550 BCE, Age of the Patriarchs (Abraham, Issac, Jacob) Found in the Holy Land and purchased in Israel in 1980s. Globular in form with funnel-shaped mouth, a horned handle on either side. Intact and heavily encrusted with earthen deposits, in great condition. 21 1/2" high. Many ancient cultures used amphoras, large two-handled ceramic jars, to carry liquid goods, such as olive oil, wine, or fish-sauce. Each amphora type is regionally specific; since the type seen here is most commonly found on sites near the Holy Land, the vessel and the product it carried both came from that area.
