Yoruba, Nigeria Wooden Shrine Panel
Yoruba, Nigeria Africa, wooden Shrine Panel, 19th Century. While the meaning of all of the carvings is not known, many images allude to two Yoruba gods, Eshu & Ogun, though they are never depicted. Eshu & Ogun are gods who cross boundaries. Other carved images also refer to the doors' function. For example, snakes & crocodiles are boundary-crossing creatures that inhabit two worlds: above & below the ground, and wet & dry areas. Panel is 61" x 25" with wear appropriate to age, in good condition.
