This exquisite musical instrument dates from 1810 - 1815, and is by the French maker, Sebastian Erard, one of the preeminent Harp makers of all times. It has an almost statuesque appearance, with its glorious look and Neoclassical details. The gilt wood column is in the style of a fluted pillar, topped with ornate high relief winged female figures and Mermen. The beautiful brass tuning plates stand out against the elegant curve of the black neck with gold pinstripe. The soundboard also in black is stunning with its architectural embellishments and classical Roman and Greek maidens with musical instruments. The foot of the harp also contains high relief female figures with wings and musical instruments, resting on animal paw feet.
This harp is a double action harp, which Erard himself designed and patented in June of 1810. This is considered by most people the date that the Concert Harp as we know today, was invented. It has 43 strings and eight pedals, seven are used for notes and the eighth is for opening the back of the sound board. The pedals have three positions, which allow the musician to raise the pitch of each of the notes. The tuning plates are marked on both sides and read as follows: SIDE 1 Royal Coat of Arms Pictured, Sebastian Erard, Patent N3662, 18 Great Marlborough Street, London. SIDE 2 Sebastian Erard, Maker, by Special Appointment, to his Majesty and the, Royal Family. The condition overall is very good and appears that most of it, is in its original state. If it has been restored it would have been in the late 1800's to early 1900's. The integrity of the column, neck and knee are excellent. The sound board does have some subtle age cracks and a few missing string pegs, which are shown in the photos. The pedal that opens the doors on the sound board still works. There is a crack on the base plate of the foot which is shown in one of the photos. Strings would naturally be replaced as you would on any old stringed musical instrument. The appearance as it is currently, is excellent if you want a decorative piece or to play for occasional use. Make sure to view all the photos to see the remarkable quality of this fine antique musical instrument. We always welcome serious inquiries.
