THE CROSS OF THE MILLENNIUM by Frederick Hart (American 1943 - 1999)
This marvelous acrylic sculpture, has the look of a faceted cut crystal cross, containing the figure of Christ, as he ascends to the Heavens. Frederick Hart was known for his ability to sculpt with light, while creating stunning detail and realism, as you'll see in the photos. Adding to the spiritual significance of the piece, are the reflections that are cast around the work when lit. A lighted pathway appears in the front, while behind the piece are fractured bits of light, like the reflections of a leaded glass window. This sculpture is truly an Inspirational work of art. Hart created this work in 1995 for the upcoming Millennium celebration in the year 2000. The base of the cross is signed and dated 1995, and is marked 1932 of 2000. The cross measures 11.375"H x 7.125"W x 1.75"D. This same design was used to create a large scale piece which was given to Pope John Paul II. Hart was also known for his commission of the huge Ex Nihlo sculpture for the west facade of the National Cathedral in Washington DC. This incredible work depicts the creation of mankind and has been referred to as the most monumental religious sculpture of the twentieth century.
