A vintage mask of the Mai tribe from Middle Sepik River area in New Guinea. Nicely carved face with flaring nostrils. Conch shells are used for eyes and for the beard area while feathers and other organic materials are tied to create hair. Beautiful curvilinear designs are painted in white to decorate the face (they may perhaps be tattoos or tribal facial decorations). This piece was collected in the 1960s in Australia by Campbell Wylly 19th, former assistant curator of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He bought it from a visiting missionary from New Guinea. This piece has quite a presence and would make a nice wall hanging and dates to the 1940s. Height: 36" PLEASE NOTE that we are a working gallery. No one will be available to answer questions on the weekends and holidays. All of our pieces are Guaranteed Genuine, no reproductions! |
