This is a box from the Kuba culture in Zaire, circa 1920-30. The box has an incised geometric design carved around the outside, and a face carved into the center of a raised lid. The box was used by a Kuba tribe to hold tukula, a red powder made of ground cam wood. This red powder was used for decoration of one’s hair and body, as the red color distinguishes beauty in the culture. There is damage to this piece in the form of slight surface scratches on the wood, and a few cracking areas (please see photographs). Remnants of the red tukula powder still tint the inside of the box. A beautiful example from the Kuba culture.
