| This unusual figure is from the Toba Batak Tibe in Sumatra, an effigy of a man. The figure is a near life-size puppet called a "Si Gale Gale", Gale translating to weakling or the unfortunate, that would have been used in funeral ceremonies. By moving a series of cords, this figure could be made to perform a "tortor" or dance, moving its arms, legs, hands nd head, sticking out it's tongue, and shutting it's eyes. The dance's purpose was to satisfy the spirits so a deceased man without any male decendants may have his death soul set free to again a good place in the spirit realm. During these ceremonies, the soul of the dead is thought to inhabit the puppet. | |||||
