Description: This is a wooden box from the African culture known as the Kuba dating to circa 1900. The box is hand carved from wood and features a face motif on the top of the lid and geometric designs around the outside of the box. Theses boxes were called ngedi mu ntey by the Kuba and would have been used to hold tukula (twool), a red powder made from ground cam wood. The tukula would have been used for painting the face and body during ceremonies as well as anointing the dead. The box is in good condition with some chips as seen in the photos.
The Kuba inhabited the region of present day of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) and declined around 1900 due to the colonial occupation of the Belgians. There art however continues to live on. Dimensions: 4.5” x 4” PLEASE NOTE: We are a working gallery and are not available to answer questions on weekends. All of our pieces are Guaranteed Genuine, no reproductions! |
