A Japanese OKIMONO (larger ornamental carving for Japanese-style room “TOKONOMA”) beautifully carved with vivid detail. Seven sages of the Bamboo circle the piece creating a balanced, rhythmic movement complimenting the circular shape of the piece. Each sage wears a flowing robe and is in an interesting and dynamic posture. Fine attention was given to pose, texture of hair and facial features. The sages walk around a bamboo forest that can be seen peeking out behind the backs of the men. This forest is echoed by the lid which is carved to represent bamboo stalks. The lid screws on tightly to the piece (see photos). This exquisite piece dates to the 19th century.
P.s. Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove is a story based on seven Chinese literati who fled to a secluded bamboo grove (chikurin) where they could express their ideas freely by the pure conversation (seidan), music, and wine to escape the chaos of the Wei - Jin period (the 3rd – 5th Century). The subject was popular with Japanese painters of the Momoyama and early Edo periods who tended to transform the theme into a rather generalized image of reclusive scholars engaging in literary pursuits. Height: 3 1/2" PLEASE NOTE that we are a working gallery. No one will be available to answer questions on the weekends and holidays. All of our pieces are Guaranteed Genuine, no reproductions! |
