Description: A rare IKI NINGYO ('living doll') depicting with great realism a finely modeled woman's head made of wood covered in 'gofun' (crushed shell paste). She has inset glass eyes, eyelashes and bone teeth. Probably made to be used in a shop selling kimono, hair ornaments or cosmetics. Signed on the base: 'Respectfully made by TANIMOTO (Osaka)'. Date: c 1920 Size: 13" high. Excellent condition (a few tiny flaws to the gofun on her face).
