JAPANESE EDO PERIOD GOLD LACQUERED 'JUBAKO'
Description: A beautiful gold lacquered(maki-e)'jubako' (ceremonial food container) of octagonal shape in three sections very finely decorated in 'hiramaki-e', 'takamaki-e' and 'nashiji' with scenes of cranes, pine trees, flowers and pavilions surrounded by borders incorporating 'mon' (crests). The lid is decorated with a large crest depicting a phoenix with a border of scrolling peony flowers. Date: Edo period :18th century Condition: Slight lacquer loss and cracks restored Notes: Provenance: Emile Guimet (1836-1918) Collection (inscribed accession number inside lid). Size: 13.5" x 11.5"
