SUPERB QUALITY JAPANESE KOMAI DAMASCENE CASKET
A large and very fine quality Japanese inlaid iron (damascene) casket in the form of a lantern made by the KOMAI company of Kyoto. The casket is of cylindrical form on four raised bracket feet with a pair of hinged doors opening to reveal four drawers. The central section is decorated all over in gold and silver 'nunomezogan' with Chinese style landscapes surrounded by a raised silver border enclosed within floral and geometric patterns. This motif continues on the lower platform foot with interspersed sixteen-petal chrysanthemum flowers. The upper section is decorated with Imperial phoenix, 'ho-o' in flight among paulownia leaves. Signed: "Made by Komai of Kyoto in Japan" (Nihonkoku Kyoto ju Komai sei). Size: 10" (25cm) high by 7" (18cm) wide. Meiji period: 1868-1912 Excellent condition. One foot with a slight bend.
