A Pair of Very Fine Mineral Pigment Painted Chaekkori: Korea, Joseon period, 19th century Each painting painted with bright color mineral color pigment, each painting mounted on cloth, painted with a scholar’s utensils including books, desk, brushes, papers, and still-life objects and ect. It’s in very fine condition without any typical damages at all. Measurements:32cm x 94.5cm H each panel painting only, or 47cm x 111cm each panel including frame. *** Chaekkori is a Confucian theme, directly related to the scholarly aspirations of the yangban class (the landed gentry, the scholar-officials of the Yi dynasty), yet book-stack screens were popular in the homes of commoners as well. Although literacy an dluxury goods were not available to monst commoners, a Chaekkori screen added a sense of dignity and elegance to the home. It symbolized the Confucian ideals of education and self-improvement, hopefully providing inspiration to the family’s chidren. Because of tis Confucian theme, a book-stack screen also functioned as a talisman that harmony would prevail in the household.
