A Rare and Fine Inlaid Shark skin Red Lacquered Box and Cover;
Korea, Choson period, Early 19th Century,
This red lacquered and inlaid whole shark skin box and cover made for imperial palace use in general.
The deep, rectangular box fitted with a shallow lid, inlaid on the cover in shark skin only on a red lacquer ground with two large blossoms and leafy, scrolling stem, the sides of the box inlaid with identical flower scroll set between line borders, the interior lined in an original silk, now faded, and the base with gold lacquer.
It is in almost perfect condition without any damage but a small crack on the bottom base.
It measures 11 1/2” x 6 1/4” x 7 1/2”
