A Very Fine Tiger and Magpie Painting:
Korea, Choson Dynasty, 18th –early 19th Century,
This tiger and magpie painting is a quite large size painting
and is painted in ink and light colors on paper.
This Tiger looks like showing his singing and dancing to a magpie on the tree,
and The Magpie looks like serious listening the tiger’s performing.
This tiger is a very humorous and cute in this painting rather than a awful looking.
hey are in very good fellowship each other in Korean folk painting.
It is in very good condition, there is no any minor damage (bears
little stains).
It measures 99cm x 57.8cm (39”x 22.75”). It is mounted with fabric and framed without glass.
****In Choson period, Tiger and Magpie paintings are among the most delightful of all Korean folk art.
The Magpie is the messenger of the Village Spirit, and Tiger is the messenger of the Mountain
Spirit. Paired with the tiger in a New Year’s painting, the magpie portends good fortune for the coming year.
