This is a beautiful rug made of many pieces of asa ( hemp ) cloth which are hand-woven and natural indigo dyed. Probably it was produced in Tohoku region where cotton cultivation was difficult because of severely cold climate. It has stitches with hemp threads. In good condition. This is a nobori ( a vertical banner ) with "oni" ( ogre, one kind of Japanese monsters ) which is hand-painted with sumi and pigments. The characteristics of oni are: one or two horns on the top of the head, fangs of the tiger, wearing a loin cloth made of tiger skin and it is very mighty. It has a few holes in the upper blue part and some stains, however in good condition as a whole. Late 19th or early 20th century. 36cm x 285cm 14.2" x 7ft28"

This is a Korean wrapping cloth, chogappo which is made of asa ( linen ) and all hand sewn. "Pojagi" is a general name for wrapping cloth and "chogappo" is one kind of pojagi which is made with patch-work with silk as well as asa ( reference source: "Korean Embroidery and Wrapping Cloths from the Choson Dynasty" published by Japan Art & Culture Association in 1995 ). This one is made of fragments of asa which are old cloth and has three mending patches which look done in later time...

The light source was oil or a candle in old days, but a light bulb is replaced for this one. You can see the prominent craftsmanship of wood, especially in the round cover. In excellent condition. This is a Kurume kasuri futon cover which is made of hand-woven and natural indigo dyed cotton. Kurume kasuri has been produced in Kurume city in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu since early 19th century. Geometric mosaic pattern and light indigo blue color are its characteristics. This is a noren which is made of hand-woven cloth, asa ( hemp ) threads for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It has "Genji-guruma" crest and bold tsutsugaki auspicious motifs such as bamboo, pine tree and plum tree blossoms. These motifs are rather common, but the hand-painting is very lively and strong. Tsutsugaki is freehand-painting using rice paste as resist. It is probably not for a shop but one of bridal goods...

This is a noragi ( work wear ), called "makanai" in Tohoku district, according to Tanaka Chuzaburo who has been researching folklore in Aomori prefecture in Tohoku and collecting folk crafts and country textiles for more than 40 years.
