This is a portable lantern called "Odawara chochin" which is made of copper, bamboo strips and Japanese paper coated with kaki-shibu ( persimmon juice ) for water-proof. This is a beautiful andon, lantern made of wood and coated with red urushi ( Japanese lacquer ). It has two circles and each one has Japanese paper half pasted and one of them can turn so that the light source can be controlled. In good condition but has some chips and scratches. This is a noren which is made of hand-woven cloth, asa ( hemp ) threads for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It has "Genji-guruma" crest and bold tsutsugaki auspicious motifs such as bamboo, pine tree and plum tree blossoms. These motifs are rather common, but the hand-painting is very lively and strong. Tsutsugaki is freehand-painting using rice paste as resist. It is probably not for a shop but one of bridal goods...

This is a noragi ( work wear ), called "makanai" in Tohoku district, according to Tanaka Chuzaburo who has been researching folklore in Aomori prefecture in Tohoku and collecting folk crafts and country textiles for more than 40 years. ( The last photo is from the catalogue of his collection ). The outside is made of asa ( hemp ) which is lightly natural indigo dyed and the inside is made of bleached cotton. This is a set of woman's tobacco case and pipe case which are made of deer skin and has fine katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) komon pattern. The motif is pine needle. It has beautiful clasp of green bean motif which shows prominent craftsmanship in this age. Pilgrim's coat made of hemp whose wefts and warps are hand-plied. It has many stamps of holy places where the pilgrim had visited as well as Sanscrit letters and a beautiful stamped image of Fudo ( Cetaka ) in the back. It also has hand-drawn sutra in the lower parts. One can read kanji letters "Omine-san" which is one of the mountains between Wakayama and Nara prefecture where "shugen-sha ( holy man )" has been practicing Shugendo. The area was designated as "World Heritage"...
