Cover for tanto (short sword) or other item made of animal skin and coated with urushi. It has the crest of "Roku-mon-sen" meaning six coins which is the crest of Sanada clan. In the clan, Sanada Yukimura is especially known for a genius strategist of war. He challenged his arch enemy Tokugawa for his lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 17th century. The lining is thin silk cloth. 4 wood containers, a set of 3 nested pieces and one. They have urushi coated which is called "tamenuri". It is one kind of urushi which is vermillion or Bengara (Bengal red) is undercoated and after it is dry, suki-urushi (clear lacquer) is overcoated. The date when they are acquired is written in the bottom of the nested ones, that is Meiji 18 (1886) and also the owner's name. In good condition, no noticeable damage and crack, however they are not good for containing liquid...
